CERENIA is an anti-emetic (anti-vomiting) product indicated for the treatment and prevention of acute emesis (including emesis induced by chemotherapy) and the prevention of vomiting due to motion sickness in dogs. CERENIA is also indicated for the treatment of acute vomiting in cats.
CERENIA is an NK-1 receptor antagonist, and acts to prevent Substance P (a neurotransmitter) from binding to NK-1 receptors. NK-1 receptors have been recently identified as a key receptor involved in the vomiting reflex and these receptors are found in high concentrations within the chemoreceptor trigger zone (CRTZ) and within the emetic center, where all emetic stimuli ultimately converge. By blocking the binding of Substance P to NK-1 receptors within the emetic center, CERENIA is effective against vomiting stimuli regardless of the origin.
According to the product label, dogs should be dosed 2 hours prior to travel and following a 1 hour fast. Zoetis recommends that the tablets are administered with a small amount of food to reduce post-dosing emesis and does not recommend a prolonged fast prior to dosing.
